Gum Grafts

About Gum Grafts

Soft tissue grafting (gum graft) in dentistry is a surgical procedure that involves the addition of soft tissue, such as gum tissue, to the mouth to repair or rebuild areas of the gums that have receded or been damaged. The purpose of soft tissue grafting is to improve the appearance of the gums, to protect the exposed roots of the teeth from decay and sensitivity, and to strengthen the gums to reduce the risk of future recession.

There are several types of soft tissue grafting procedures that can be used in dentistry, including:

Connective tissue graft:

This type of graft involves taking a small piece of tissue from the roof of the mouth and attaching it to the area where the gum has receded.

Free gingival graft:

This type of graft involves taking a small piece of tissue from the roof of the mouth and attaching it to the area where the gum has receded.

Pedicle graft:

This type of graft involves taking a small piece of tissue from the surrounding gums and attaching it to the area where the gum has receded.

Allograft:

This type of grafting uses donated human tissue or artificial materials.

The soft tissue grafting procedure is usually done under local anesthesia or IV sedation. A small incision is made in the gum tissue, and the soft tissue or tissue-like material is placed into the area where the gum has receded. The gums are then sutured closed and the area is left to heal.

After the soft tissue grafting procedure, the patient will need to follow a strict oral hygiene regimen and follow-up with our doctors. Healing times can vary depending on the type of soft tissue grafting procedure performed and the individual case.

Soft tissue grafting can be a successful procedure but there is a risk of complications such as infection, bleeding, or rejection of the grafted material. It’s important to discuss the risks and benefits with our doctors before undergoing the procedure.
